Inspiring the Next Generation Through AI and Technology Skills

I recently had the opportunity to participate in the AI & Technology Skills Training Programme organized by AAAI Nigeria in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education. The workshop was designed to introduce senior secondary school students to the opportunities and responsibilities that come with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

My presentation focused on Responsible AI, Digital Citizenship, and Career Pathways, highlighting how students can use technology wisely today while preparing for the careers of tomorrow.

We explored practical ways AI can support learning, including simplifying difficult concepts, creating revision materials, generating quizzes, and helping students engage more effectively with educational content. At the same time, I emphasized the importance of critical thinking and introduced the THINK framework: Test sources, Have alternatives, Investigate facts, Never assume, and Keep questioning.

A major theme of the session was the ethical use of AI. Students were encouraged to use AI as a tool to enhance learning rather than replace their own thinking. We discussed why submitting AI-generated work as one's own is problematic and why originality, creativity, and personal understanding remain essential skills in both education and the workplace.

Drawing from my experiences as both an artist and a programmer, I shared how AI can be a powerful assistant when used responsibly. Whether creating art or writing code, AI works best when it complements human creativity, expertise, and judgment rather than replacing them.

The session concluded with key reminders for safe and responsible AI use: protect personal and confidential information, verify facts independently, and avoid relying on AI alone for important decisions.

As AI continues to shape the future, equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and ethical awareness to use these tools responsibly is more important than ever. It was inspiring to engage with students who are eager to learn, innovate, and contribute positively to Nigeria's digital future.
